South Side C.O.G.I.C. Mission: To enhance the growth of the kingdom of God through fellowship with integrity to make a difference in the lives of all
This Is How Our Story Began
South Side Church of God in Christ made its debut January 20, 1960. In 1960 Elder Samuel Smith opened the doors of South Side at 1081 East McLemore with his wife Mother Lee Ella Smith and their oldest daughter. When Elder Smith started the church there were no members. But some of their friends came to worship on opening day. The only music was an old upright piano taken from the pastor’s home to be dedicated to the glory of God.
As the Lord began to add to add to the church a small choir of six was born. The late Elder John R. Simpson used to say “We’re few but strong,” and the choir could say amen to that. The choir became an award winning choir. During the years the choir competed in state Choir Contest and was always number one.
God continued to bless South Side and the church later moved across the street to its current location 1112 East McLemore.
Some of the members including the founder Bishop Samuel Smith and his wife Mother Lee Ella Smith have been called from labor to reward. Others are working across the world to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.
